MDE Electric Company At Forefront In Multi-Family
Market In Silicon Valley
When it comes to multi-family housing in the San Francisco
Bay area, MDE Electric Company is dominating the market.
As the largest multi-family electrical contractor in Northern California, the growing company has played a major role
in that sector’s rise, wiring over 50,000 apartments and condo
developments during the past few decades, and completing
over 1,350 units in 2016, according to the Silicon Valley Wire,
the quarterly newspaper published by NECA-IBEW in the
region. MDE Electric is currently working on at least 1,800
additional apartment units in Silicon Valley, with another
1,000 units underway in San Francisco.
MDE Electric is well known in the community. A family-owned business headquartered in Sunnyvale and a member
of the National Electrical Contractors Association, it has been
around for more than four decades. It has grown from a two-person operation to a team of over 150 professionals since its
start in 1973. The services it provides include commercial and
residential wiring, landscape lighting, underground utilities,
telephone, cable and intranets.
One of the developments MDE recently wired, according to
the Silicon Valley Wire article, is Vista 99 Apartments, located in
the Renaissance neighborhood of San Jose, near a host of high-
tech companies and about a mile from Levi’s Stadium. This
development, within walking distance to restaurants, parks,
and nightlife, includes 554 market rate apartments.
Vista 99 Apartments features one-, two-, and three-bed-room apartments constructed in four levels of wood frame
over two levels of concrete garage (one level underground
and one level on grade). It provides luxurious living with its
gourmet kitchens, high-end finishes, and a rooftop deck with
pool and cabanas.
MDE Electric did both the electrical infrastructure
installation and the low voltage service for the development,
working on a plan-spec basis for the electrical and design
build for the low voltage. The company’s electricians brought
in power to the building from the transformer and then ran it
throughout the facility to the apartments.
MDE Electric also installed a number of low voltage systems at Vista 99 Apartments, including access control systems,
security cameras, fire alarm systems, two-way communication
systems, and ERRC (emergency responder radio code systems).
New projects for MDE Electric are popping up as well. It
is currently wiring the Lexington Luxury Apartments on an
adjacent site in San Jose, a market rate development which will
be completed in the spring of 2017. This 387 unit apartment
complex features a 6-tier garage surrounded by 5 levels of wood
frame apartments designed in the Texas wrap style. Amenities
include a pool and clubhouse, with a lounge, gameroom, and
NECA Announces 2017 Project Excellence
To showcase the exceptional work that is being performed by members throughout the country, the
National Electrical Contractors Association has launched the Project Excellence Awards. These awards recognize companies for their outstanding commitment, professionalism and ingenuity in delivering electrical projects. Awards will span
projects across 11 different market sectors and will be based on whether the electrical/technology portion of the project is
valued under or over $1 million for each market sector, except for overhead transmission and substation/interconnection.
NECA began accepting submissions earlier this year, and the deadline for projects completed in 2016 is March 31. The
first set of awards will be presented at NECA 2017 Seattle in October. Go to www.necanet.org/project-excellence for
